I built the MIDI guitar whilst studying Musical Instrument
Technology at London Guildhall University. After completing
my course I was asked to provide a demonstration of the
guitar at the Department's Christmas gig. Fellow graduate
and self-confessed shredder, David Spector, was planning
to give the last of his annual performances at this gig.
Feeling that David's superior guitar skills would do better
justice to the capabilities of the MIDI guitar I persuaded
him to use the instrument for his own set. For my contribution
I provided the guitar/MIDI kit along with some tuition in
its use and general technical assistance. The resultant
solo performance by David Spector took place in December,
1999 and used no instruments other than the single MIDI
guitar. No pre-recorded backing tracks or drum machine patterns
of any kind were used. Where backing tracks were needed,
these were recorded, looped and played back to audience
in real-time using Logic Audio. All of the instruments that
can be heard in the recordings are as played during the
live performance. David now plays his own MIDI enabled guitar.
